Diseases not totally eradicated such as infectious diseases and accelerating incidence of metabolic and neoplatic diseases burden developing world today. This is a reflection of both population increase and poverty progression. The rapid development of medicine in the last few decades has created new disease entities. One such clinical picture is iatrogenic systemic mycoses, the incidence of which has increased alarmingly alongwith the enormous technological development in the field of intensive care and the introduction of multiple chemotherapy of malignant diseases.
Amongst the infective diseases, mycoses is reaching alarming proportions, due to exogenous and endogenous immunosuppression. In addition to known etiologic agents, several emerging with hitherto uncommon agents are increasingly being reported world wide.
Medical Mycology is currently undergoing rapid changes on a global basis, largely as a result of the dramatic increase in the incidence of opportunistic fungal infections in the immunosuppressed group of patients. The incidence of these infections and the diversity of fungi causing them, has parallelled the emergnce of AIDS, more aggressive cancer and post transplantation chemotherapy and the use of antibiotics, cytotoxins, immunosuppressive, corticosteroids and other macro disruptive procedures that result in lowered resistance of the host As a consequence, hospitals throughout the world caring for immunosuppresed patients are now recognizing the need to maximize their diagnostic capabilities for the early detection of systemic opportunistic fungal infections.

" Though Indian climate is well suited for fungal infections, there are very few good Mycology laboratories available in this country. Clinicians are not still aware of the growing rate of fungal infections. In this gloomy scenario, SRDTHFD is performing a very important role. In diagnosis and treatment of human fungal diseases with joint effort of Microbiologists, Pathologists, Physicians, Epidemiologists and Taxonomists. "
